S.A. Ibrahim is chief executive officer of Radian Group Inc. (NYSE: RDN), based in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Radian is one of the largest private mortgage insurers of U.S. residential mortgages, with a core focus of protecting mortgage lenders from default-related losses. Radian has also provided financial guaranty insurance and currently maintains a sizable insured portfolio of municipal bonds and structured finance transactions. Through its business lines, Radian currently manages a total credit exposure of approximately $110 billion.
Despite the recent challenge of one of the worst economic and housing-related downturns, through Mr. Ibrahim’s leadership, Radian has maintained a relatively strong financial position -- with total assets of nearly $7 billion and stockholders' equity of more than $1 billion as of June 30, 2011. Radian increased its private mortgage insurance market share during this period to approximately 20% of today's high-quality market and continually strengthened its management team.
Prior to joining Radian, Mr. Ibrahim was the CEO of GreenPoint Mortgage Funding based in Novato, California. Under his leadership, GreenPoint Mortgage transformed itself from a small mortgage originator to one of the leading U.S. mortgage originators. In 2002, GreenPoint Mortgage was selected by a group of international business leaders as the winner of the Wharton Infosys Business Transformation award for North America. GreenPoint Mortgage was also a pioneer in business process outsourcing.
Mr. Ibrahim's experience also includes heading international reengineering for American Express, being the CEO of Chemical Mortgage as well as working at Bank of America and General Electric Company. Mr. Ibrahim has served on various boards, including the Fannie Mae National Advisory Board and the Mortgage Bankers Association Board of Governors. Currently, he serves on the Board of Trustees of the Institute of International Education in New York, the Wharton Executive Board and the Academy of the University of Pennsylvania. He was an advisor to the White House team on President Obama's 2009 Cairo speech and was a keynote speaker at the Presidential Entrepreneurial Summit in Washington in April 2010. In August 2010, Mr. Ibrahim was one of twelve panelists of mortgage industry leaders, economists and consumer advocacy groups chosen to speak at the Housing Policy Summit, which was organized by the U.S. Treasury Department and HUD to discuss the future of the housing finance system.
Mr. Ibrahim and his family support education and promote international and inter-faith understanding through the Ibrahim Family Foundation. Past major initiatives include the Ibrahim Fellowship at the Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania, the Ibrahim Family Theater at the International House of Philadelphia, and the Ibrahim Leadership and Dialogue Project in the Middle East (sponsored through the Institute of International Education). Mr. Ibrahim has recently been identified as one of the leaders in encouraging friendship and dialogue among Jews, Christians and Muslims and has participated in several programs that aim to bring together the members of these three faiths.
Mr. Ibrahim has personally been an angel or early investor in various start-up businesses and in new real estate development opportunities in California and India, including Indus American Bank that is headquartered in New Jersey and serves the needs of the fast growing South Asian community; Hydros Bottle, LLC that manufactures and distributes environmentally friendly reusable plastic bottles with filters; Happy Baby, an early stage company that manufactures and sells organic baby food; American Halal, a startup company that distributes high quality specialty food in the US; Think Impact, a global social enterprise that provides social entrepreneurship opportunities in rural Africa for US college students; and Teach Town, that creates and markets animation and learning technology aimed at educating children with Autism.
Mr. Ibrahim holds an MBA in Finance from The Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania and a BE in Engineering from Osmania University in India. Mr. Ibrahim is a naturalized and proud US citizen, who was born and raised in Hyderabad, India and lives in the United States along with his wife, also a US citizen and originally from Karachi, Pakistan.
